Balík, also published in Czech, 2007, and Komunismus v České republice (Communism in the Czech Republic, 1999, with P. Fiala, M. Mareš, and P. Pšeja), editor and co-editor of edited books (for instance, Politické strany ve střední a východní Evropě [Political Parties in Central and Eastern Europe], 2002, with P. Fiala and M. Strmiska) and author of a number of essays and articles published both in the Czech Republic and abroad.His research interests include theory of non-democratic and hybrid regimes, issues of transformation and consolidation of post-communist political regimes, especially that of Russia and the post-Soviet republics, political science as an academic discipline, and modern Czech politics.
